For a long time, mobile phone masts were operated away from people's homes, but now they are being installed right next to them.
These antennas have been installed in ten cities in Broward County, including the neighbourhoods of Lauderhill and Lauderdale Lakes. Similar masts are also installed in Palm Beach and in Miami-Dade County.
Surprisingly, residents have complained that these masts will affect their health. According to residents, the masts are also an eyesore.
Lauderhill resident Sylvia Lightener asked how it could be possible that these masts emit no radiation at all. Officials at Crown Castle said the antennas are micro-cell structures designed to fill coverage gaps in specific areas. The companies operating these antennas have 10,000 such masts across the nation, commented Melissa Anderson. She added that the communication mast system is less dangerous than ordinary masts and is designed to protect public health. In South Florida, these masts are installed across the region. Portland has received applications and is holding meetings to notify residents. Dan Holmes said half a dozen new masts will be installed this year.
