The Rise of Voice Biometrics for Mobile Phones

Voice biometrics is becoming the preferred method of authentication on mobile phones. Researchers say they have come up with ways of overcoming the usual limitations.

With everything from banking records and health records to photos and contact lists now accessible through your mobile phone, one of the greatest concerns is being able to access such data securely. This explains why data holders and phone manufacturers have their eyes on biometric security systems, given the need to identify individuals reliably.

The question now is which biometric system is best. Those undergoing intense research include face, iris and fingerprint recognition. For a mobile phone, the most appropriate choice is voice identification. Unfortunately, the approach has its limitations.

For example, your voice can change significantly if you are speaking in a hurry or because of an illness. Furthermore, during authentication, it is easy for someone to record your voice. For these reasons, many groups have opted not to use voice biometrics.

Now, R.C. Johnson and his colleagues claim to have a different approach that will help solve these problems. The new system is designed to provide secure authentication while preserving the user's privacy at the same time.
