London, UK - QinetiQ has developed a low signal strength GPS module, known for short as LSS. It is said that, towards the end of 2003, this technology will be in operation and available to relevant customers and development partners.
The module makes satellite tracking possible in extremely low signal environments, producing reliable positioning solutions inside buildings, under very dense foliage and in urban canyons.
The LSS GPS module sits at the heart of QinetiQ's positioning-integration platform.
Ian Pirie, the GPS Telematics director at QinetiQ, claimed that QinetiQ is well ahead of the market, with more than 100 GPS experts and 20 years of dedicated research and development experience.
This technology is designed for use in newer customer applications, for example improved customer services using dispatch systems. In the taxi industry, such a dispatch system uses GPS information to automatically and quickly assign a job to the nearest cab or vehicle as soon as a customer requests one.
This technology can also be used to help ambulances and other service fleets take the shortest route between two locations. In this way, services are bound to improve and fuel costs will naturally fall.
